Dentures Q & A

How do dentures work?

If you’re missing teeth, dentures are a removable solution to improve your smile.

Dentures are artificial teeth attached to a synthetic base that matches your gums. To conceal your lost teeth, the base slips over your gums where your missing teeth used to be. Dentures are custom-made using a mold of your mouth to ensure a comfortable fit.

Dentures offer several benefits, including:

  • Supporting or restoring your facial structure
  • Preventing remaining teeth from shifting
  • Replacing teeth that were in poor condition
  • Increasing your self-confidence

There are two primary types of dentures: complete and partial.

What are complete dentures?

Complete dentures offer a solution if you need to replace all of your teeth.

Cosmetic dentures are made from high-quality materials like resin or porcelain that look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. The framework is made of acrylic resin or flexible (nylon) polymer. Complete dentures can be conventional or immediate.

Conventional

Dr. Park makes conventional complete dentures once he's removed the teeth and the gum has healed, which takes four to six weeks. During this time, you have no teeth.

Immediate

Dr. Park makes immediate conventional dentures in advance and places them immediately after he removes the teeth. Once your mouth has healed, you return to have your dentures adjusted.

Dr. Park will work closely to ensure a comfortable fit and look that closely matches your natural tooth and gum color.

What are partial dentures?

If you don’t need to replace all of your teeth, Dr. Park recommends partial dentures.

Partial dentures are attached to a framework that attaches to your surrounding natural teeth. You may need crowns on the natural teeth to act as anchors, but Dr. Park will work with you to determine the best approach for your partial dentures.

What is the process for getting dentures?

Dr. Park guides you through the process of replacing your missing teeth with partial or full denture options.

Before your permanent dentures are ready, your mouth needs to be prepared. This might include extracting teeth.

To guarantee a natural look and comfortable fit, Dr. Park takes dental impressions of your mouth and works closely with you to select the color, size, and shape of your dentures.

Once your dentures are ready, Dr. Park has you try them for a short period to see how they fit. If there’s any discomfort, he adjustments them for you at your follow-up appointment.
