Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are incredibly thin shells of composite resin or porcelain bonded to your teeth. They’re used to mask various oral imperfections and make your smile look symmetrical.

Some people only get one or two veneers, but most opt for six or eight. They’re beneficial for improving the physical appearance of your front teeth, specifically the incisors and canines.

What oral problems can veneers correct?

At Beaumont Cherry Valley Dental, Dr. Park uses veneers to correct a variety of oral problems, including:

  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Teeth with gaps or spaces between them

Dr. Park also uses veneers to mask the appearance of tooth stains or discoloration that won’t respond to traditional teeth whitening treatments.

What does getting veneers involve?

Getting veneers typically takes two separate appointments spaced two or three weeks apart.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Park conducts an oral exam, asks about your goals for treatment, and reviews your oral health history. He then takes oral X-rays to ensure your teeth are healthy and strong enough to support the veneers.

If Dr. Park determines you’re a good candidate, he administers a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort and lightly buffs and shapes your teeth to prepare them. Afterward, he takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to a laboratory that manufactures your custom veneers. Together, you choose the color for your new veneers.

At your second appointment a week or two later, Dr. Park cleans your teeth with a bonding liquid, lines up your veneers, and bonds them in place using dental cement. He polishes the veneers, trims the excess material, and sends you home with care instructions.

Do veneers require regular maintenance?

To keep your veneers in optimal shape, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene. Dr. Park recommends brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting Beaumont Cherry Valley Dental twice a year for a professional cleaning and oral exam.

If you play sports or lead a physically active lifestyle, wear a mouthguard. In addition, avoid bad habits like biting down on hard objects, nail-biting, or opening objects with your teeth. By following these tips, your veneers can last 10-15 years and maybe longer.
